Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, better known as Eleanor Roosevelt, was an American political figure, diplomat, and activist. She served as the first lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945, during her husband, President Franklin D. Roosevelt‘s four terms in office. Today, I am exploring the idea of how to ensure you are a satisfied customer.

Have you ever been in a situation where someone is trying to sell you something, and seemingly they can’t do enough for you?

They promise so much, and they seem so keen to ensure that you enjoy a ‘great customer experience.’

Then you buy, you part with your money, and suddenly everything changes.

They’d love to help you, but that wasn’t included in the sale price, despite you having been given the impression that it was.

This is particularly true with a service, in my experience.

If you have a tradesman or woman doing work for you, for as long as they haven’t been paid, they’ll do just about anything and everything you ask.

Once they’ve been paid, “they’d love to help you, but they’re far too busy.”

The moral of the story is that paying for a service before you’ve actually received it is always a mistake.

You won’t be well-served if they’ve already got your money; undoubtedly, that’s a fact, I’m afraid.

So my message to you is clear, dear reader. You pay as little as possible upfront and retain as much as possible until the work has been finished to your complete satisfaction.

How to be happy and why you should be

How to be happy? Now, that’s a question I hear frequently.

Well, I believe that if you’re going to be happy, then you need a sense of purpose.

Now just think about that for a minute. Your work takes up one-third of your life, so surely it’s essential that you’re happy doing whatever you do?

So dear reader, if the question on your mind today is how to be happy in life, then to find the answer, it’s worth reflecting on your work for a moment and thinking about whether it’s right for you.

Reflect on your work:

Does your work make you happy?

Do you believe your contribution to your job is something that only you can supply?

Would you say that your work is closely aligned with your natural talents?

If your job is a mismatch with your natural talents, then you’re unlikely to do it as well as you might do otherwise. If you don’t do it well, then it’s hard to feel a sense of pride in your work, surely? And if you’re not doing it well, your boss is likely to give you a hard time as well.

So in this scenario, you’re not going to be very happy, are you?

Do what makes you happy:

Let’s face it, spending your life doing something you don’t enjoy is such a waste, wouldn’t you agree?

You have so much natural talent that could be put to better use.

Yes, every job has its chores. Things you have to do, which you hate but accept as part of the job. No job is perfect.

However, tedium should only be a small part of your whole work experience.

To feel happy and fulfilled doing the work you do means that you should enjoy at least 70% to 80% of your daily activity.

What happens if the job you do and your talents are mismatched?

Consider the personal cost:

Human beings are flexible and adaptable, of course. So even in the worst job situations, people survive, but at what cost to themselves?

The further you are from applying your natural talents and abilities, the less likely it is that you’ll enjoy your work in my experience. And being unhappy at work means you’re less likely to be happy in life. That’s a fact.

And if you’re not happy, then it’s difficult to make a genuine contribution to life and the lives of other people. And this matters, particularly for those people who are your loved ones.

If your loved ones have to deal with someone who’s doing a job they don’t enjoy, then it can make their lives miserable, too. In fact, it can be no pleasure for anyone around you.

If you derive no pleasure from your work, then life just becomes a grind. Also, it becomes stressful, which is not very good for your health either.

The sweet spot:

The best and least stressful way to earn a living is by pursuing your interests and something that you both enjoy, and that is compatible with your natural talents. This is the sweet spot, and it’s how to be happy in life.

If society encouraged people to pursue their interests and work to their strengths, then we would not only be happier, but we would also become more productive.

And of course, productive lives are happy lives too. We would all benefit, and society would reap benefits too.

So think about what you enjoy doing and your natural talents, and then think about how you can best apply them.

Not there yet? Keep looking:

It’s important to be happy doing what you do, but if you’ve yet to find work that makes you happy, then keep looking and don’t give up until you find it.

It’s possible to enjoy what you do. Other people do, and so can you.

How to know your life purpose in 5 minutes? Now there’s an interesting question.

If you ask yourself five simple questions, you can identify your purpose, and with that knowledge, you can succeed.

If you speak with successful people, they’ll usually have a strong sense of their life purpose.

However, most people in life are unaware of their life purpose.

Far too many people in this world are unhappy with their lives because, for whatever reason, they feel they haven’t made the best use of their natural talent.

Too many people that I meet in their 40s and 50s seem to feel their lives have been mostly wasted so far.

Now, I’m not referring to complete losers here.

I’m talking about people who actually appear to have what we all crave, i.e. an affluent lifestyle and well-paid jobs.

However, just because they’ve made some money doesn’t mean they feel they’ve made the best of their lives.

Money’s important for living, of course, but having a sense of purpose and a feeling that we’re making a difference in other people’s lives is also very important if we want to be happy with our lives. And surely we all want to be happy?

I strongly believe that we’ve all been put on this earth for a reason.

We all have our part to play, and we all have a unique contribution to make.

Certainly, we all have a unique set of talents.

If what we do is congruent with our life purpose, then we can make a real difference to the world around us and to other people, too.

Well, if you have absolutely no idea what your life purpose is, then a little self-analysis is a good place to start. However, what questions should you be asking yourself?

Far too many people seem to regard parenting as an inconvenience to fit in around careers, lifestyles, and a burning desire for personal fulfilment.

It’s increasingly common to see young children accompanying adults on crowded commuter trains far too early in the morning, as parents rush to deposit them at a nursery or with a childminder before the working day begins.

These little people will be the next generation. They’re the people who will carry the baton forward to build a better tomorrow, so how they’re brought up matters greatly, particularly in those all-important preschool years, which are critical to their development.

Is it such a good idea to leave them with someone who couldn’t possibly have their best interests at heart in the way that every parent should? You can decide for yourself, dear reader, but I must say, I doubt it.

I think that children, once we have them, should always be our priority over everything else.

Why you should teach your children that failure doesn’t matter

1. Failure:

Today, I am exploring the idea of failure in relation to children and why it doesn’t matter.

2. What is success?

We all want our children to reach their full potential, don’t we?

We want our children to lead lives in which they’re happy and fulfilled. I’m sure you’ll agree, dear reader.

My definition of success is “continually doing the best I can to exploit my full potential while making sure that I enjoy every day as it comes along.“

I don’t want to live forever, but I do want to live today.

There are many things I want.

Firstly, I want to enjoy the work I do.

I want to be stretched, growing in character and strength all the time.

And even as an increasingly mature adult, I remain keen to learn something new every day. If I keep learning, I won’t become old before my time.

My philosophy about life and success I gained from my parents, and it’s something I try to pass on to the next generation.

Essentially, my philosophy is that it’s better to try and fail than it is to spend the rest of my life wondering what might have been.

If I try, either I’ll succeed, or I’ll learn a valuable lesson. And if it proves to be a lesson, then it will be one I won’t forget. In other words, I can’t lose.

3. There’s no such thing as a failure:

There are two things you should always remember about what we refer to as failure:

There’s no such thing as failure. There are just outcomes you didn’t want and opportunities to learn and try again.
Failure is an outcome; it’s never a person.

A person cannot be a failure, ever!

Unfortunately, we often label people as failures, and that label’s burden can become something hard to bear and even harder to shake off.

Parents and teachers can often be guilty of this, however unintentionally.

Teach children that it’s much more important to try and that they should never worry about failure.

If children can appreciate that failure is just an outcome other than what they wanted, they’ll be better placed to learn the lessons and do better next time.

And those lessons learned will be more valuable to children than anything an adult can tell them.

If you tell me the stove is hot, I may not remember. If I burn my hand on a hot stove, I’ll only do it once, and I’ll never forget it. That’s a valuable commodity known as experience.

If we keep trying, we’ll learn, and if we keep learning, eventually we can all be successful.

4. Teach your children well:

The best way to teach children about success is to teach them that failure is not a bad thing. It’s an essential ingredient for achieving success.

Teach children never to fear failure. As long as they learn the lessons, then failure doesn’t matter at all.

So teach your children to have a go and to make sure they enjoy the experience along the way too.

Let them know that either they’ll succeed or they’ll learn a lesson. Either way, they’ll gain, and of course, they’ll grow in character too.

Remember that we can only truly appreciate success if we’ve experienced a few failures along the way. And to fail occasionally helps keep us humble too, and that’s no bad thing, is it?

5. Force for good

If you think about it, failure is a force for good.

Failure is simply a natural part of life and learning. No one starts as a master of their craft. Every successful person starts as a complete beginner.

Everyone fails occasionally, and at any given time, we’re more likely to fail than we are to succeed.

Learning from failure makes us wiser, of course, and it makes us tougher too. It builds character.

Failure is never desirable as such, but it’s very useful. It’s also inevitable, at least sometimes.

The only way to avoid failure is to avoid risks and challenges, and then you cannot learn, and you cannot grow as a person. If you never try anything, you can never be anything. And what would be the point of that?

6. Secret to success

The secret to success is to use all your unsuccessful experiences as stepping stones to achieving your goals.

Failure is never final, and we should not allow an unsuccessful experience to discourage us or cause us to give up. All too often, people give up just as they’re on the verge of success.

REMEMBER: Failure is not, nor will it ever be, a person.

Next time your child gets an outcome he or she didn’t want, reassure him or her that, though it might be disappointing, it’s not a problem, and they should never think otherwise.

Always reassure them that a failure is simply an opportunity to learn a lesson and try again. However, make sure they recognize the lesson to be learned.

Anyone experiencing failure should simply reflect on their actions and the outcome to discover the underlying lesson within.

Then we simply use the knowledge gained to guide future efforts.

Perseverance and persistence will get us there in the end.

Teach your children well, but never, ever allow them to believe they’re in any way a failure. Just encourage them to use the experience of undesirable outcomes to be a bit smarter next time.

Do that, and you’ll prepare them well for their life ahead.
