Quotes About Inspiration (16-21):

10 shocking quotes guaranteed to make you think

There are many categories of quotes. One category I’ve not explored until now is shocking quotes. That is quotes where the authors refer to something which to them is shocking.

Well, today I offer you 10 shocking quotes guaranteed to make you think.

These are 10 great quotes and I hope you find them all interesting and thought-provoking.

Shocking Quotes:

  1. The most shocking fact about war is that its victims and its instruments are individual human beings and that these individual beings are condemned by the monstrous conventions of politics to murder or be murdered in quarrels not their own. ~Aldous Huxley
  2. The writer of originality, unless dead, is always shocking and scandalous; novelty disturbs and repels. ~Simone de Beauvoir
  3. A shocking crime was committed on the unscrupulous initiative of few individuals, with the blessing of more and amid the passive acquiescence of all. ~Tacitus
  4. To me, the most shocking thing about grit is how little we know, how little science knows, about building it. Every day, parents and teachers ask me, ‘How do I build grit in kids? What do I do to teach kids a solid work ethic? How do I keep them motivated for the long run?’ The honest answer is, I don’t know. ~Angela Duckworth
  5. The way we allow children to be advertised to is shocking. Eating is a learned behaviour, and we’ve made these kids sitting ducks for all the bad messages about industrialized food. The fact that we allow that to go on is horrifying. ~Ruth Reichl
  6. The poverty one still sees in America today is more shocking to me than anything I have seen in Ethiopia or Calcutta or Manila, and has made me, as someone living in a society of great wealth and someone who’s never had to worry about the next meal, think seriously about what universal responsibility really means. ~Pico Iyer
  7. It’s very shocking, I think, for people caring for the dying to realise how unsaintly they feel, how much anger is mixed up with their grief. In fact, often I think the anger that they feel is a form of grief; it’s a kind of rage against what’s happening. ~Helen Garner
  8. It’s shocking to me that it’s easier to buy a gun at Wal-Mart than it is to buy my record. ~Marilyn Manson
  9. I’d rather get a good clean laugh with good material, than an easy laugh by swearing or shocking. That’s not clever or comedic, anybody can get a laugh that way, it’s too easy. ~Jim Dale
  10. I think it is shocking that 15- and 16-year-olds leave school unable to add up and with the reading ability of a four-year-old. ~Joan Collins

Poem about lifestyle choices

It is a fact, that frequently other people will try to tell us how we should live our lives or express disapproval of our lifestyle choices in some way.

For some reason, they think they get to decide what is or isn’t the correct way that we should conduct ourselves.

Now I agree with the idea of right and wrong. I accept that certain things are universally considered wrong. Stealing for instance, or cheating on a loyal partner. Essentially, this means doing things that hurt other people.

However, if you choose to live in a way that does not hurt anyone else, why should that be anyone’s business but your own?

If you’re not hurting or bothering anyone else, surely you should be free to live as you please.

I was thinking about this yesterday, and my thoughts very quickly turned into a poem, which I thought I’d share with you, dear reader.

I hope it proves thought-provoking. Please feel free to share it on Pinterest or your preferred social media app.

Neanderthal Man: A poem about a modern phenomenon

For those unfamiliar with the term, Neanderthal man was a subspecies of humans that lived in Europe and Asia from around 400,000 to 40,000 years ago. In this context, the word ‘man’ is being used as a synonym for human beings.

In theory, this subspecies is long gone. Nevertheless, when we see how some people behave during modern protests, you must wonder whether this is true.

Don’t get me wrong, protesting is a valid form of making your voice heard in any democracy. People are entitled to protest if they feel they have a genuine grievance, and their voices are not being heard.

Where I do have a problem, though, is when protest descends into violence, vandalism, and destruction of property. I think that’s unnecessary. Certainly, it’s unlikely to win over hearts and minds, in my opinion.

Anyway, I summarised my thoughts on this subject in the form of a poem, which I thought I’d share with you, dear reader.

It’s just how I see it. You may see it differently and that’s fine. We all have our opinions on these things.

If you like the poem, feel free to share it.

Patriotism poem to get you thinking

I’m always fascinated by the reaction to displays of patriotism, particularly by the mainstream media here in Britain. It usually involves subtle mocking or sneering, and rarely is it considered a noble thing. Perhaps that’s just the way it is here.

However, what’s wrong with people feeling a deep sense of connection with their roots? What’s wrong with people feeling a sense of belonging and pride in their nation?

Surely, patriotism fosters unity, strength, and a collective spirit that uplifts everyone.

I’m not an enthusiastic flag-waver by nature, but I am quietly proud of my roots and it’s certainly an important part of my sense of identity.

Anyway, having given the issue some thought recently, I wrote a patriotism poem to reflect how I felt about it.

I hope it will get you thinking about patriotism a little.

Poem about mistakes and why they’re important

We all make mistakes, and they can be frustrating.

Let’s face it, mistakes are inevitable, at least occasionally. However, remember this, mistakes are invaluable too.

We learn more from our mistakes than we could ever learn in a classroom. Every mistake we make is a lesson in disguise, offering us insights that no textbook or training could ever provide. And these are lessons we’ll never forget.

Mistakes form the basis of that valuable commodity known as experience.

If we embrace our mistakes and take the lessons from them, this is how we develop mastery in whatever we’re doing.

A willingness to embrace mistakes is what separates the average from the exceptional.

You too can be exceptional if you’re willing to make mistakes and learn from them.

Never fear mistakes. They are your best teacher.

To help you reflect on the points made here, allow me to offer you a poem about mistakes.

Poem to Celebrate the Working Class

In a world driven by ambition, and big money, it’s easy to overlook the quiet strength of those good people on whom much of society depends. The people who make a difference and without whom nothing would work. In short, where would we be without the working class?

The working class, also known as the working poor or blue-collar workers, refers to people employed in occupations requiring either manual labour or modest levels of skill, often with limited financial resources and social mobility.

I don’t think such people get the credit they deserve for the contribution they make. So, in today’s poem, I thought it was time we honoured them.

These people are the hands that build, the minds that create, and the spirits that persevere through challenges most of us will never see.

Today’s poem is a tribute to those unsung heroes.

They deserve recognition, and they deserve more than they get.

Let’s take a few moments to remember ordinary people.
