How to ensure you’re a satisfied customer

Have you ever been in a situation where someone is trying to sell you something and seemingly they can’t do enough for you? They promise so much and they seem so keen to ensure that you enjoy a ‘great customer experience‘.

Then you buy; you part with your money; and suddenly everything changes.

They’d love to help you but that wasn’t included in the sale price, despite you having been given the impression that it was.

This is particularly true with a service, in my experience.

If you have a tradesman or woman doing work for you, for as long as they haven’t been paid, they’ll do just about anything and everything you ask.

Once they’ve been paid, “they’d love to help you but they’re far too busy”.

The moral of the story is that paying for a service before you’ve actually received it is always a mistake.

You won’t be well-served if they’ve already got your money, undoubtedly that’s a fact I’m afraid.

So my message to you is clear dear reader. You pay as little as possible upfront and retain as much as possible until the work has been finished to your complete satisfaction.

Do that and you’ll always be sure to get a job well done. Part with your money first and you’ll be a hostage to fortune.

40 Quotes by Eckhart Tolle to inspire you

As I read his book The Power of Now recently, I thought it would be interesting to explore some quotes by Eckhart Tolle.

Eckhart Tolle, or Ulrich Leonard Tölle as he was born, is a German-born spiritual teacher and self-help author of books such as The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment.

After being recommended by Oprah Winfrey, The Power of Now reached The New York Times Best Seller list in 2000. Its success meant that it was soon followed by A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose.

It’s always interesting to listen to successful people, so here are 40 quotes by Eckhart Tolle that I hope you will find inspiring.

Enjoy them all and please feel free to share them.

Quotes by Eckhart Tolle (1-15):

  1. The only thing you ever have is now.
  2. You’re not a problem that needs solving.
  3. Life’s an adventure. It’s not a package tour.
  4. You are the universe, you aren’t in the universe.
  5. Power over others is weakness disguised as strength.
  6. If you’re not living this moment, you’re not really living.
  7. Being at ease with not knowing is crucial for answers to come to you.
  8. The more you live in the present moment, the more the fear of death disappears.
  9. To realize that you are not your thoughts is when you begin to awaken spiritually.
  10. Many people identify their sense of self with the problems they have or think they have.
  11. It is through gratitude for the present moment that the spiritual dimension of life opens up.
  12. If small things have the power to disturb you, then who you think you are is exactly that: small.
  13. If there are people you haven’t forgiven, you’re not going to really awaken. You have to let go.
  14. When the dog looks at you, the dog is not thinking about what kind of a person you are. The dog is not judging you.
  15. The ‘soul’ is one of the words you can use to talk about your innermost being, the essence of who you are.

Quotes by Eckhart Tolle (16-25):

  1. Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. Make the Now the primary focus of your life.
  2. If you live only in one culture for the first 20 years of your life, you become conditioned without knowing it.
  3. Thought can be so seductive and hypnotic that it absorbs your attention totally, so you become your thoughts.
  4. People don’t realize that now is all there ever is; there is no past or future except as a memory or anticipation in your mind.
  5. Discontent, blaming, complaining, and self-pity cannot serve as a foundation for a good future, no matter how much effort you make.
  6. The power for creating a better future is contained in the present moment: You create a good future by creating a good present.
  7. People look to time in expectation that it will eventually make them happy, but you cannot find true happiness by looking toward the future.
  8. If the structures of the human mind remain unchanged, we will always end up re-creating the same world, the same evils, the same dysfunction.
  9. Many people in this world are still so identified with every thought that arises in their heads. There is not the slightest space of awareness there.
  10. Acceptance looks like a passive state, but in reality, it brings something entirely new into this world. That peace, a subtle energy vibration, is consciousness.

Quotes by Eckhart Tolle (26-30):

  1. Don’t wait to be successful at some future point. Have a successful relationship with the present moment and be fully present in whatever you are doing. That is success.
  2. Dogmas are collective conceptual prisons. And the strange thing is that people love their prison cells because they give them a sense of security and a false sense of ‘I know.’ Nothing has inflicted more suffering on humanity than its dogmas.
  3. The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive. To put it more accurately, you usually don’t use it at all. It uses you.
  4. Thinking is a wonderful tool if it’s applied. Thinking, however, cannot become the master. Thinking is a very bad master. If you’re dominated by thinking then your life becomes very restricted.
  5. Most humans are never fully present in the now because unconsciously they believe that the next moment must be more important than this one. But then you miss your whole life, which is never not now.

Quotes by Eckhart Tolle (31-35):

  1. Your entire life only happens in this moment. The present moment is life itself. Yet, people live as if the opposite were true and treat the present moment as a stepping stone to the next moment – a means to an end.
  2. People tend to dwell more on negative things than on good things. So the mind then becomes obsessed with negative things, with judgments, guilt and anxiety produced by thoughts about the future and so on.
  3. There is a fine balance between honouring the past and losing yourself in it. For example, you can acknowledge and learn from mistakes you made, and then move on and refocus on the now. It is called forgiving yourself.
  4. In the West, as well as some other parts of the world, the personal sense of ego tends to predominate, whereas in other areas, there is a more collective sense of ego. This collective ego emphasizes the ‘we’ rather than the ‘I.’
  5. Thoughts are fine when you don’t confuse them with who you are, and then thoughts are not a problem. Thinking is a wonderful tool to create things in this world. It only becomes problematic and a source of suffering when you confuse thinking with who you are.

Quotes by Eckhart Tolle (36-40):

  1. So many people have this idea: I want to achieve something great or be somebody great. And they neglect the step that leads to greatness. They don’t honour this step at this moment because they have this idea of some future moment where they are going to be great.
  2. To complain is always non-acceptance of what is. It invariably carries an unconscious negative charge. When you complain, you make yourself into a victim. When you speak out, you are in your power. So change the situation by taking action or by speaking out if necessary or possible; leave the situation or accept it. All else is madness.
  3. Any action is often better than no action, especially if you have been stuck in an unhappy situation for a long time. If it is a mistake, at least you learn something, in which case it’s no longer a mistake. If you remain stuck, you learn nothing.
  4. In the egoic state, your sense of self, your identity, is derived from your thinking mind – in other words, what your mind tells you about yourself: the storyline of you, the memories, the expectations, all the thoughts that go through your head continuously and the emotions that reflect those thoughts. All those things make up your sense of self.
  5. Wherever you are, be there totally. If you find your ‘here and now’ intolerable and it makes you unhappy, you have three options: remove yourself from the situation; change it; or accept it totally. If you want to take responsibility for your life, you must choose one of those three options, and you must choose now. Then accept the consequences.

7 inspirational quotes about parenting

Today, let’s explore some inspirational quotes about parenting.

Can there possibly be any activity in life that is more important than parenting? I don’t think so.

Yet it is often undervalued in the modern age, or so it seems. Children are the future, so surely they should be our priority?

Far too many people seem to regard parenting as an inconvenience, to fit in around careers, lifestyles, and a burning desire for personal fulfilment.

It’s increasingly common to see young children accompanying adults on crowded commuter trains far too early in the morning, as parents rush to deposit them at a nursery or with a childminder before the working day begins.

These little people will be the next generation. They’re the people who will carry the baton forward to build a better tomorrow, so how they’re brought up matters greatly, particularly in those all-important preschool years, which are critical to their development.

Make your children your priority:

Is it such a good idea to leave them with someone who couldn’t possibly have their best interests at heart in the way that every parent should? You can decide for yourself, dear reader, but I must say, I doubt it.

I think that children, once we have them, should always be our priority over everything else.

Their best interests should always take precedence, surely? That’s easier said than done I know and inevitably there must be some balance and compromise, of course.

However there’s no more important job than being a parent and there’s no greater satisfaction than seeing that little bundle of joy turn into a decent, civilized and well-adjusted adult.

I have had many fine experiences in my life but being a parent has been the best of them all.

It hasn’t been easy, and I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way. However, the rewards have been well worth any sacrifices I’ve had to make.

Our children are our legacy:

Let us not forget that our children are the real legacy we give to the world. They’re the gift that will keep on giving if only in terms of their contributions to society throughout their lifetime.

Here are seven inspirational quotes about parenting to help you reflect on the importance of being a parent.

Quotes about parenting:

  1. When you hold your baby in your arms the first time and you think of all the things you can say and do to influence him [or her], it’s a tremendous responsibility. What you do with him [or her] can influence not only him [or her] but everyone he [or she] meets and not for a day or a month or a year but for time and eternity. ~Rose Kennedy
  2. To be a good father and mother requires that the parents defer many of their own needs and desires in favour of the needs of their children. As a consequence of this sacrifice, conscientious parents develop a nobility of character and learn to put into practice the selfless truths taught by the Savior himself. ~James E. Faust
  3. Every word, facial expression, gesture, or action on the part of a parent gives the child some message about self-worth. It is sad that so many parents don’t realize what messages they are sending. ~Virginia Satir
  4. There are times as a parent when you realize that your job is not to be the parent you always imagined you’d be, the parent you always wished you had. Your job is to be the parent your child needs, given the particulars of his or her own life and nature. ~Ayelet Waldman
  5. At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of parents. ~Jane D. Hull
  6. Don’t worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you. ~Robert Fulghum
  7. It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men [or women]. ~Frederick Douglass

Success Secrets: How your life can be better than it is now

How is life for you? Perhaps you’re lucky and you have a great job, a nice house, a fancy car, a loving family and a lifestyle which is the envy of your neighbours. If that’s you then well done but there’s nothing for you here. If you’ve achieved all that then you don’t need any success secrets from me.

If it is you then I must tell you, you’re in a minority. However, I’m guessing you’re not part of that minority. Am I right? Statistically, you’re much more likely to be a member of life’s majority. Those people with a desire for their lives to be better but who for whatever reason cannot translate that desire into something that’s better.

Statistically, you’re more likely to be part of that group of people constantly on the lookout for success secrets. People searching for the ‘secret sauce‘ if you like. You’re not alone of course but I hope this post will help you.

Why is it that some people are successful and others are not?

What secrets do the successful know that the unsuccessful do not know?

Can anyone be successful? The simple answer is yes.

However unsuccessful people tend to think it’s not possible, so they don’t try. They just accept what they’re given as if that’s all they can expect from life. It’s almost as if they say to themselves, this is all life has for me. It’s like they believe that there are no success secrets.

Well, I must tell you now, if it’s not obvious to you, life can be better. Life is what you make it. Within reason, you can be whatever you want to be. You can have more. Other people do, so why not you?

Right now, where you are is where you are. It doesn’t really matter. What matters is that you don’t have to remain where you are. You’re not a tree, you can move. You can change. You can decide that your life will be different. And you can work towards something that’s better.

Your life really can be better than it is and you can be better than you are. However for it to be better you have to believe it can be better and you have to believe that you can turn it around. In fact, you have to believe in success secrets.

One thing all successful people have in common is a belief that something different can happen and they can make it happen. They don’t allow anyone to tell them it can’t be done. They know what they want and they’re determined to get it.

Some might consider them delusional but successful people see it as self-belief. They won’t accept that they cannot do something because intuitively they know, if they try hard enough, then anything is possible. If they decide what they want and strive for what they want, they just know that somehow they can get it. The price is determination and hard work but they’re willing to pay that price.

Successful people know that when faced with an elephant you cannot swallow it whole. However, it can be eaten one bite at a time.

If you’re building a wall then you don’t start with the entire wall. You start with a single brick and you get that right. Then once that’s securely in place you move on to the next brick and then the next and the next and so on. Pretty soon if you stick at it long enough you’ll have the whole wall.

Successful people know that they can’t get to where they want to go in one single leap. They know you get there gradually, one step at a time. And if you want to be successful, it starts with taking the first step.

Readers familiar with Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) will know that if you want to be successful you look for successful people, identify what they do and then copy that model. The idea is that if it worked for them then there’s a good chance it will work for you too. Most successful people will have had role models they’ve copied at various times.

So if you want to be successful look around for successful people and listen to what they have to say. Most people would accept that Will Smith is successful. In the video included here, he shares his thoughts on the secrets of success.

His observations are interesting and well worth a few minutes of your time. I can recommend them to you.

25 Quotes by Charles Dickens to get you thinking

Today I thought it would be interesting to explore some quotes by Charles Dickens.

Charles John Huffam Dickens was a famous English writer and social critic. He created some of the world’s best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era.

Dickens’ works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime and, by the 20th century, critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are still widely read today.

However, don’t assume Dickens had an easy start in life. He left school at the age of 12 to work in a boot-blacking factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors’ prison.

Nevertheless, after three years, he returned to education, before eventually, he began his literary career as a journalist. The rest, as they say, is history.

In addition to his written work, he campaigned vigorously for children’s rights, education, and other social reforms.

He was certainly a man who left his mark on life. So, he was well worth listening to, I think.

21 quotes about what matters most in life

In modern life, it’s easy to forget the things that matter most to us. It’s easy to take our eyes off the ball completely.

These days, there’s a tendency for people to be more obsessed with themselves. Life is all about selfies and social media, or so it seems. However, none of these things matter very much, do they?

It’s true, they may offer a mild diversion from our chores, but they’re also a distraction and a time-waster, surely?

And if people are not obsessed with social media then they’re focused on their careers and/or money in the belief that these things are the most important things in life.

Why you should teach your children that failure doesn’t matter

1. What is success?

We all want our children to reach their full potential, don’t we?

We want our children to lead lives in which they’re happy and fulfilled. I’m sure you’ll agree, dear reader.

My definition of success is, “Continually doing the best I can to exploit my full potential while making sure that I enjoy every day as it comes along.”

I don’t want to live forever but I do want to live right now.

There are many things I want. Firstly, I want to enjoy the work I do. I want to be stretched, growing in character and strength all the time. And even as an increasingly mature adult, I remain keen to learn something new every day. If I keep learning, I won’t become old before my time.

My philosophy about life and success I gained from my parents and it’s something I try to pass on to the next generation.

Essentially, my philosophy is that it’s better to try and fail than it is to spend the rest of my life wondering what might have been.

If I try, either I’ll succeed or I’ll learn a valuable lesson. And if it proves to be a lesson, then it will be one I won’t forget. In other words, I can’t lose.

2. There’s no such thing as a failure:

There are two things you should always remember about what we refer to as failure:

  1. There’s no such thing as failure. There are just outcomes you didn’t want and opportunities to learn and try again.
  2. Failure is an outcome; it’s never a person. A person cannot be a failure, ever!

Unfortunately, we often label people as failures, and that label’s burden can become something hard to bear and even harder to shake off.

Parents and teachers can often be guilty of this, however unintentionally.

Teach children that it’s much more important to try and that they should never worry about failure.

If children can appreciate that failure is just an outcome other than what they wanted, they’ll be better placed to learn the lessons and do better next time.

And those lessons learned will be more valuable to children than anything an adult can tell them.

If you tell me the stove is hot, I may not remember. If I burn my hand on a hot stove, I’ll only do it once, and I’ll never forget it. That’s a valuable commodity known as experience.

If we keep trying, we’ll learn, and if we keep learning, eventually we can all be successful.

3. Teach your children well:

The best way to teach children about success is to teach them that failure is not a bad thing. It’s an essential ingredient for achieving success.

Teach children never to fear failure. As long as they learn the lessons, then failure doesn’t matter at all.

So teach your children to have a go and to make sure they enjoy the experience along the way too.

Let them know that either they’ll succeed or they’ll learn a lesson. Either way, they’ll gain, and of course, they’ll grow in character too.

Remember that we can only truly appreciate success if we’ve experienced a few failures along the way. And to fail occasionally helps keep us humble too, and that’s no bad thing, is it?

4. Force for good

If you think about it, failure is a force for good.

Failure is simply a natural part of life and learning. No one starts as a master of their craft. Every successful person starts as a complete beginner.

Everyone fails occasionally, and at any given time, we’re more likely to fail than we are to succeed.

Learning from failure makes us wiser, of course, and it makes us tougher too. It builds character.

Failure is never desirable as such, but it’s very useful. It’s also inevitable, at least sometimes.

The only way to avoid failure is to avoid risks and challenges, and then you cannot learn and you cannot grow as a person. If you never try anything, you can never be anything. And what would be the point of that?

5. Secret to success

The secret to success is to use all your unsuccessful experiences as stepping stones to achieving your goals.

Failure is never final and we should not allow an unsuccessful experience to discourage us or cause us to give up. All too often, people give up just as they’re on the verge of success.

Next time your child gets an outcome he or she didn’t want, reassure him or her that, though it might be disappointing, it’s not a problem, and they should never think otherwise.

Always reassure them that a failure is simply an opportunity to learn a lesson and try again. However, make sure they recognize the lesson to be learned.

Anyone experiencing failure should simply reflect on their actions and the outcome to discover the underlying lesson within.

Then we simply use the knowledge gained to guide future efforts.

Perseverance and persistence will get us there in the end.

Teach your children well, but never, ever allow them to believe they’re in any way a failure. Just encourage them to use the experience of undesirable outcomes to be a bit smarter next time.

Do that, and you’ll prepare them well for their life ahead.
