Neanderthal Man: A poem about a modern phenomenon

For those unfamiliar with the term, Neanderthal man was a subspecies of humans that lived in Europe and Asia from around 400,000 to 40,000 years ago. In this context, the word ‘man’ is being used as a synonym for human beings.

In theory, this subspecies is long gone. Nevertheless, when we see how some people behave during modern protests, you must wonder whether this is true.

Don’t get me wrong, protesting is a valid form of making your voice heard in any democracy. People are entitled to protest if they feel they have a genuine grievance, and their voices are not being heard.

Where I do have a problem, though, is when protest descends into violence, vandalism, and destruction of property. I think that’s unnecessary. Certainly, it’s unlikely to win over hearts and minds, in my opinion.

Anyway, I summarised my thoughts on this subject in the form of a poem, which I thought I’d share with you, dear reader.

It’s just how I see it. You may see it differently and that’s fine. We all have our opinions on these things.

If you like the poem, feel free to share it.

Patriotism poem to get you thinking

I’m always fascinated by the reaction to displays of patriotism, particularly by the mainstream media here in Britain. It usually involves subtle mocking or sneering, and rarely is it considered a noble thing. Perhaps that’s just the way it is here.

However, what’s wrong with people feeling a deep sense of connection with their roots? What’s wrong with people feeling a sense of belonging and pride in their nation?

Surely, patriotism fosters unity, strength, and a collective spirit that uplifts everyone.

I’m not an enthusiastic flag-waver by nature, but I am quietly proud of my roots and it’s certainly an important part of my sense of identity.

Anyway, having given the issue some thought recently, I wrote a patriotism poem to reflect how I felt about it.

I hope it will get you thinking about patriotism a little.

Poem about mistakes and why they’re important

We all make mistakes, and they can be frustrating.

Let’s face it, mistakes are inevitable, at least occasionally. However, remember this, mistakes are invaluable too.

We learn more from our mistakes than we could ever learn in a classroom. Every mistake we make is a lesson in disguise, offering us insights that no textbook or training could ever provide. And these are lessons we’ll never forget.

Mistakes form the basis of that valuable commodity known as experience.

If we embrace our mistakes and take the lessons from them, this is how we develop mastery in whatever we’re doing.

A willingness to embrace mistakes is what separates the average from the exceptional.

You too can be exceptional if you’re willing to make mistakes and learn from them.

Never fear mistakes. They are your best teacher.

To help you reflect on the points made here, allow me to offer you a poem about mistakes.

Poem to Celebrate the Working Class

In a world driven by ambition, and big money, it’s easy to overlook the quiet strength of those good people on whom much of society depends. The people who make a difference and without whom nothing would work. In short, where would we be without the working class?

The working class, also known as the working poor or blue-collar workers, refers to people employed in occupations requiring either manual labour or modest levels of skill, often with limited financial resources and social mobility.

I don’t think such people get the credit they deserve for the contribution they make. So, in today’s poem, I thought it was time we honoured them.

These people are the hands that build, the minds that create, and the spirits that persevere through challenges most of us will never see.

Today’s poem is a tribute to those unsung heroes.

They deserve recognition, and they deserve more than they get.

Let’s take a few moments to remember ordinary people.

7 inspirational quotes about humor to make you think

quotes-about-humorHumor is the most powerful medicine known to man [and woman].

Humor is a cure for so many ills. It doesn’t matter how bad you feel, a good laugh can really make you feel so much better.

In all humor there is an underlying germ of truth. It is poking fun at the truth that makes us laugh.

However, for those on the receiving end, humor can sometimes hurt. Having a good laugh at someone else’s expense can only ever be acceptable if they can see the funny side too.

So be careful with your attempts at humor. Be kind and be mindful of the sensibilities of other people.

Banter and mild leg-pulling is fine but overdo it and it can quickly turn into bullying. And that’s really not very nice, is it?

So, have a good laugh whenever possible. However, make sure someone else doesn’t have to pay an unacceptable price for your laughter.

Here are seven inspirational quotes about humor to reinforce today’s message.

Quotes About Humor:

  1. A day without laughter is a day wasted. ~Charlie Chaplin
  2. Everything is funny, as long as it’s happening to somebody else. ~Will Rogers
  3. There’s a thin line that separates laughter and pain, comedy and tragedy, humor and hurt. ~Erma Bombeck
  4. I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it’s the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It’s probably the most important thing in a person. ~Audrey Hepburn
  5. I realize that humor isn’t for everyone. It’s only for people who want to have fun, enjoy life, and feel alive. ~Anne Wilson Schaef
  6. Good humor is a tonic for mind and body. It is the best antidote for anxiety and depression. It is a business asset. It attracts and keeps friends. It lightens human burdens. It is the direct route to serenity and contentment. ~Grenville Kleiser
  7. Most comedy is based on getting a laugh at somebody else’s expense. And I find that that’s just a form of bullying in a major way. So I want to be an example that you can be funny and be kind, and make people laugh without hurting somebody else’s feelings. ~Ellen DeGeneres

15 inspirational quotes about society to get you thinking

Today dear reader, let’s explore some quotes about society. I think the importance of society is not always fully appreciated.

People are social animals and society is the fabric that binds us all together.

We don’t have to like each other but we do have to get along with each other if life is to be tolerable and people are to feel safe and secure.

Getting along requires us to treat each other with respect of course but society could not function without an accepted system of governance, a broadly common culture and everyone feeling that they are being treated fairly.

That does not mean people within a given society must be completely homogeneous. It does not mean that there cannot be differences. There are and will always be some differences between people within society and that’s fine.

However, no group can stand completely apart from everyone else in society, if society is to function well. You’re either part of a society or you’re not.

We all have a responsibility to society:

If you choose not to be part of a given society for whatever reason then that’s your decision and it’s perfectly reasonable to have a preference for living in some other society.

After all, that’s why people emigrate, to find a way of life that’s more consistent with the way they would prefer to live.

However, you cannot accept the benefits that come with being a member of a given society and then reject the obligations you have to your fellow citizens which are a natural part of living within a given society.

Our fellow citizens matter too:

We all must try to understand our fellow citizens and try to appreciate the reality of their existence.

The better we know other people the more we will see them as people just like us with hopes and dreams and a desire to create a better world for their children.

Strip away superficial differences and we are all the same. Well, I think so anyway.

Society must exist for the benefit of everyone if it is to mean anything at all.

Benefits versus obligations:

Everyone should benefit from being a member of society but that means we all must contribute to the society within which we live as well. And we must respect our fellow citizens too.

Those making the greatest contribution may derive the biggest rewards but the strong should also lend a hand to the weak.

We all have a part to play and we all gain when society functions well. If we all work for the common good then society can benefit everyone.

The question to ask yourself:

To think about it another way; for what will you be remembered? For what would you like to be remembered?

How is the contribution you make, making the world you know a better place right now?

Well, here are 15 inspirational quotes about society to get you thinking.

Quotes about society (1-8):

  1. I think the first duty of society is justice. ~Alexander Hamilton
  2. The most violent element in society is ignorance. ~Emma Goldman
  3. A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both. ~Dwight D. Eisenhower
  4. The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children. ~Dietrich Bonhoeffer
  5. He who is unable to live in society, or who has no need because he is sufficient for himself, must be either a beast or a god. ~Aristotle
  6. You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty. ~Mahatma Gandhi
  7. Every society gets the kind of criminal it deserves. What is equally true is that every community gets the kind of law enforcement it insists on. ~Robert Kennedy
  8. We must reject the idea that every time a law’s broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions. ~Ronald Reagan

Quotes about society (9-15):

  1. There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children. ~Nelson Mandela
  2. Individual commitment to a group effort; that’s what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, and a civilization work. ~Vince Lombardi
  3. Society as a whole benefits immeasurably from a climate in which all persons, regardless of race or gender, may have the opportunity to earn respect, responsibility, advancement and remuneration based on ability. ~Sandra Day O’Connor
  4. Anyway, no drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we’re looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn’t test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power. ~PJ O’Rourke
  5. Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we’re being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I’m liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That’s what’s insane about it. ~John Lennon
  6. An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life. ~Robert A. Heinlein
  7. No society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable. ~Adam Smith
