If you want to succeed at anything in life, you’ll need a strong work ethic. That’s a given.

It’s the foundation upon which achievements are built, and people with a strong work ethic are highly valued by employers.

Think about it. If you were an employer, wouldn’t you prefer to employ people who are driven by a willingness to work hard?

Employees with a strong work ethic are more likely to stay focused and motivated, leading to higher productivity and better results. An advantage for any employer.

So, developing a strong work ethic is well worth doing, if for some reason you don’t have one already.

If you can consistently demonstrate a strong work ethic this will earn you a reputation for being a reliable employee. This in turn can open doors to new opportunities and career advancement during your working life.

However, there is another factor to remember. Taking pride in your work and consistently striving for excellence will lead to a greater sense of accomplishment and job satisfaction for you.

Never underestimate the importance of taking pride in everything you do.

Demonstrating you have a strong work ethic can inspire others too, particularly young people just entering the workforce. This can create a positive and productive work environment for everyone.

Then, of course, there is the issue of personal growth. By developing a strong work ethic this fosters discipline, resilience, and a growth mindset. These attributes are incredibly valuable assets in both your professional and personal life.  

Developing a strong work ethic:

The best time to develop a strong work ethic is when you’re young. However, the second-best time is right now.

I was lucky in life. My parents were of modest means and money at home was never plentiful. We got by but when I was growing up, the pennies always had to be counted and there was no such thing as pocket money. As a teenager, if I wanted money I had to go out and earn it.

At the time, I wasn’t thrilled about this, particularly as many of my friends lived in families that were somewhat less challenged, financially.

Anyway, when I was at school, I had several jobs that had to be fitted in around my schoolwork. I delivered newspapers, then I delivered rolls of linoleum by bicycle (not easy, I can tell you), and I delivered bread too. In short, I was always delivering something.

Looking back on this now, I realize how lucky I was at the time. In having to earn my money, I developed a strong work ethic early on that has allowed me to build a very good life for myself.

Post Script: For readers wondering what a ‘quire‘ is, it’s a bundle of newspapers. When I was young, a quire was a bundle of 26 newspapers. For my newspaper round or route, I delivered 4 quire (104 newspapers in total). The measure is still used but I believe now it’s 25 newspapers per quire.

As human beings, we struggle to deal with uncertainty because it makes us feel insecure, and one of the most fundamental human needs is the need to feel secure.

These feelings may cause physical symptoms, such as a fast heart rate and shakiness. So it can be an altogether unpleasant experience for the sufferer and not one to be underestimated in terms of the impact it can have on the individual.

When people are suffering from anxiety, they need our sympathy and support rather than our judgement and insensitive demands that they ‘snap out of it‘. If only it was that easy for them.

One technique you can use to contain your anxiety is known as Square Breathing. It’s a simple process.

Breathe in deeply to the count of 4. Hold to the count of 4. Breathe out fully to the count of 4. Hold to the count of 4. Repeat the cycle until you’re feeling calmer.

If you’re seeking some rules for success, today’s post is for you.

If success is your aim, look for successful people and copy what they do. If it worked for them, there’s a good chance it could work for you. This is a firmly held belief, and I refer to it frequently in my writing.

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. You don’t have to come up with a game plan all of your own. There are plenty of good role models out there. Just look and listen to the good and the bad; the reverent and the irreverent. And don’t forget role models can serve as a warning as well as exemplars of how something should be done. So look around and take it all in.

George Carlin would be someone who would be considered irreverent by those familiar with his work. He’s also very successful in his field. So if you’re looking for inspiration, then listening to George Carlin could be a good start. He will probably make you smile if nothing else. In this video, George highlights his Top 10 Rules for Success, and certainly, I found them inspirational.

This is an excellent series, and this episode featuring George Carlin is well worth a listen. I don’t necessarily agree with everything George says, but he’s irreverent, and he challenges your thinking, and that for me is a good thing.

The late Betty Marion White Ludden, known professionally as Betty White, was an American actor and comedian born in 1922.

She’s had the longest television career of any female entertainer.

Not only was she an actor, she was also one of the first women to have control both in front of and behind the camera, and she was recognized as the first woman to produce a sitcom.

She was probably best known for her roles in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Girls, and Hot in Cleveland.

However, she had a successful career spanning more than 75 years, and she received eight Emmy awards in various categories.

What made her interesting to me was her positive attitude.
