Quote of the Day

Vector illustration of speech bubbles“A friendship is a relationship of equals.” ~Dr Joy Browne

For a friendship to develop, you have to regard each other as equals. In any relationship there is always a power dynamic. If there is a power differential in the relationship, i.e. the balance of power is biased one way or another, then friendships usually don’t work for very long. Power differentials exist naturally in relationships such as parent-child, employer-employee and teacher-pupil, all for good reason. However for a friendship to work the relationship needs to be balanced. You must regard your friend as your equal and they must see you in the same way. You must enjoy each other’s company for its own sake and not because one of you feels superior in some way to the other.
